Professor Thornett posted his comments outside of the assignment. So, below you will find his comments from my assignment:
Charles -
Looks like a great family trip! Here are some comments:
-You picked some really out of the way places that many people don't know about including two countries that lie beyond the EU. It is interesting that Poland today in essence forms the border of the European Union which is probably not a role it asked for.
-The Crimea issue is a throwback to the land grabs of the 1800s and as you mention it looks like Putin was successful at least in the short term. Problem is, he lost all international trust by doing so and mortgaged Russia's future by drawing the sanctions you mention. Personally I would imagine that ultimately if Russia's economy collapses the people themselves could rebel against Putin, but then opinion polls seem to say a majority of Russians still favor Putin. Needed a little more detail on the specifics of the invasion and issue here such as the ethnic groups living there. -5
-Interesting choice of Gaugazia in Moldova as a culture region--definitely off the beaten path. Also interesting that they voted against joining the EU which is a long term prospect. Needed more specifics about where exactly this region is i.e. what defines this region, are there natural borders like a river etc. Also needed more on their culture itself what makes them unique. -10
-Good description of the site and situation of Kiev. As you mention Ukraine does have great resources and location it is unfortunate that corruption has been the #1 obstacle to its development. Like Moldova, for Ukraine to join the EU would be a long way away but right now it looks like they have clearly moved closer to the EU with recent agreements, in fact the refusal of the former President to sign an agreement with the EU was the reason he was ousted.
-Interesting points about the San River I did not know much about it. Like Germany, Poland has strong rivers and is relatively flat which facilitates trade.
Good job Charles I hope you get a chance to go to these countries when your family has vacation time and when Ukraine settles down.
